Snow is expected to fall near Hobart this afternoon, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting cold conditions throughout the day.

So far, snow flurries in the south of the state have been limited to the Wilderness areas, as Hobart waits for anticipated cold conditions to move in.

The bureau was expecting snow falls as low as 500 metres this morning, but conditions have been limited to small wind gusts.

Meteorologist Tim Bolden said a cold front from the south-east was expected to hit Hobart in the middle of the day.

"With that we will see the coldest temperatures and we should see some more snow fall up above 500 metres," he said.

Cold temperatures have been recorded at high altitudes, with -2 degrees Celsius recorded at Mount Read and -1C at Mount Wellington.

But Mr Bolden said the snow was unlikely to settle.

"It's unlikely to be settling, given how warm we have been recently it will be melting as soon as it hits the ground," he said.

A strong wind warning is also in place, with gusts around 50-60 kilometres per hour expected.
