A severe weather warning is in place for damaging winds up to 90 kilometres per hour in Canberra today.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the severe gusts were expected in the ACT this morning.

"When you've got 38 degrees expected maximum temperature in Sydney today and you've got snow in Tasmania down to 500 metres, you get the idea there's something going on in the atmosphere," duty forecaster Sean Carson told 666 ABC Canberra.

"With that clash of hot air and very cold air together, the atmosphere responds by basically blowing its socks off trying to find a balance."

Mr Carson said the strongest winds would be in the morning and gusts of up to 80kph had already been reported in the ACT by 6:30am.

Winds of 120kph were also reported at Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains overnight.

Mr Carson said Canberra had already hit today's maximum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and colder air would move over by the afternoon.

But he said the wind caused very warm temperatures overnight.

"This was the warmest November night we've had going back for about nine years and it's only two degrees shy of any night on record at any time of year, which is 26 [degrees]," Mr Carson said.

"So a pretty warm one, but that's what happens when the wind blows as hard as it did throughout the night.

"The temperature just does not settle whatsoever."

Emergency services reminded people to move vehicles undercover or away from trees, secure any loose items around their property and keep clear of fallen power lines.
